DO NORTH PROJECT

exploring the heart of canada

Have you ever seen the sun rise in the prairies? It's unlike anything else – boundless and isolating in the most comforting way. There is no quantifying its beauty. It signifies the beginning of the future.

And the future, almost always, guarantees an adventure...

We are Rachelle & Kristen and our mission is to inspire you to Do North by exploring what's inside Canada's heart.

Until the sun sets,

Do North.

GETTING STARTED

how to navigate

Each adventure will indicate the season we think is best for visiting. We will also rate them on a 3 point scale:

- loved it!

- worth the trip

- skip it.

We are going to be brutally honest and subjective here. You do not have to agree with us, and that's okay!

Lastly, we'll categorize our adventures based on their distance from the city centre (usually Winnipeg). Day trips will typically be within a 2 hour drive of Winnipeg and overnight trips will be 2+ hours away from the city.

Happy adventuring!

As we were driving from Black Lake Campground to the Walk on Ancient Mountains we found a well marked entrance and stopped to check it out. It was signage for the Flintstone Lake Portage trail. Nopiming Pronvincial Park is a paddler's dream. With hundreds of lakes, waterways and back country camping, there is a ton of land to explore. The portage to the lake didn't look too far so we decided to check it out.

We estimate that the trek was about 1 km one way. The trail was wide and easy to follow. Which seems appropriate for anyone carrying a canoe or boat. It also looks to be suitable for an ATV. There is one spot that is underwater so you'll have to keep left and make your way on a few logs and through the bush, but it's not too difficult.

The end is a beautiful opening of the lake. Many boats are stored there. It...

It's hard to believe that I lived in Manitoba a few years before I heard of Steep Rock. Steep Rock is located on the northeast shore of Lake Manitoba within the interlake region. You'll head north on the #6 from Winnipeg for about 2.5 hours. On the way, you can stop at the grocery store in Moosehorn if you need to get any supplies.

Turn west non 239, and right before arriving in Steep Rock you'll be mesmerized by the Caribbean blue waters that simply appeared out of nowhere. The limestone cliffs that surround the area give it a distinct alluring hue.

On a beautiful day, get to Steep Rock early for parking. Although it seems to be plentiful, as the area gets busier, I anticipate parking will become limited. Once you arrive, you have lots of activities to choose from. There are three main hikes. One...

Nopiming is the Anishinabe word meaning “entrance to the wilderness”. The name perfectly describes this provincial park. I might even argue that this is my favorite provincial park in Manitoba. It houses over 100 lakes and multiple rivers. The only roads that go through the park are gravel.

Black Lake Campground has nearly 80 sites. There is one big, busy loop (Loop A with many seasonal sites and electrical hook ups) and three much smaller, quieter loops (Loops B, C and D). We stayed in Loop D at site 2. It was elevated with a steep driveway and partially secluded by a large rock structure. To our benefit there was no one in the two closest sites making it feel wonderfully private. Loop C has two sites that are right on the water’s edge: 1 and 2. Those would be awesome sites, too!

The trail head for Black Lake Tr...
